Rafael Nadal has once again beaten Roger Federer in Australian Open 2009 in a grueling five set match which spanned for more than 4 hours with a score 7-5,3-6,7-6,3-6,6-2.

I must say if you are a Roger Federer fan then it was not a great sight to watch the Champion got beaten at the hands of Nadal like this. Well you must be wondering why i am saying this.

It was the second time that i saw Federer crying after the match is over. The first time i saw him crying was when he won Wimbeldon title for the first time in his career. The second time i saw him crying is today at the Australian Open 2009. The only difference is today he lost it.

As reporter Eleanor Preston rightly puts it, “He cried, and it was hard not to cry with him. The sight of Roger Federer’s lower lip trembling would have been enough to start most soft-hearted observers off, but by the time his tears started flowing, a far proportion of the 15,000 at Rod Laver Arena and the millions watching around the world were probably reaching for the tissues too. If that had not done the trick, then the sight of Rafael Nadal, his conqueror, putting his arm around him in friendly consolation, would have set off a worldwide outbreak of sniffles. Australia, perhaps more than any other nation on earth, values mateship, and you will not better embodiment of that than the sight of one great champion comforting another.”

As Roger Federer puts this defeat in his own words, “You can’t go through your whole life as a tennis player taking every victory that’s out there. You’ve got to live with those, you know. But they hurt even more so if you’re that close, like at Wimbledon or like here at the Australian Open. So that’s what’s tough about it.”

“In the first moment you’re disappointed, you’re shocked, you’re sad, you know, then all of a sudden it overwhelms you,” he explained afterward. “The problem is you can’t go in the locker room and just take it easy and take a cold shower. You can’t. You know, you’re stuck out there. It’s the worst feeling. It’s rough.”

It was a Power game of Nadal versus the Skills of Federer and in the end the mix of exuberance and youth had the best of it today. However Nadal was Quick to console crying Roger Federer.

“Rog, sorry for today,” said Nadal, turning to his friend with genuine compassion in his voice. “I really know how you feel right now. Remember that you are a great champion and you are one of the best in history and you will beat Pete Sampras’ 14 titles for sure.”

Roger Federer seemed not only shocked but also very much of defeated or perhaps an outgoing champion today while accepting his Runners Up Trophy at the Australian Open. And the tears continued to roll down on his cheeks till the very end of the ceremony.

Now let me ask you a simple question. Are we witnessing the end of Federer Era and the dawn of a new champion? Are we witnessing the downfall of the World’s best ever and the dawn of the World’s best ever in the making????

8 People have Responded So Far

  1. Perry Says:

No. This is not the end of the Federer era. The guy is literally in EVERY major final. People need to cut him some slack. He has been the most dominant tennis player ever to play the game. People just need to adjust to the idea of other people winning as well. Rafa has his number in the last year, but only barely. And his record against Federer in majors is deceiving. 4 of his 6 wins are at the French Open, his specialty They are 2-2 on other surfaces.

Federer is amazing. Allow him to be human. Sampras lost PLENTY of times. And did NOT make the Championship match PLENTY of times. Roger is the final EVERY time. Eventually he had to lose.

    And frankly

  2. ShowStalker Says:

    hey perry,

I couldn’t agree with you better. I am also a big fan of Federer and believe that he is the best of all time. However these days i really fear for Federer as Nadal is getting stronger and stronger against him.

I believe there’s nothing wrong in Federer’s game it’s just mental block that he has created after Wimbledon 08 Final.

  3. reddy Says:

Federer is still the king of tennis. Despite loss he managed peoples’ sympathy for his great effort.
All the best to Roger in his future endeavours

  4. Jas Says:

I never liked Roger in all years. so I supported Nadal all the way. But show of uncontrolled emotions changed my thinking in just one second. I really felt bad and was nearly in tears myself. It is such a big thing for him to break the world record. How painful it would have been for him, we cannot even imagine. How attached he is to tennis. His painful departure won him many more fans. Only now I want him to win more slams. From that moment I like him very much. He has won millions hearts. Was it such a defining moment when he cried? did all others feel the same? In one second he became my favorite.

  5. ShowStalker Says:

@ reddy:- I just hope words “King of tennis” still hold true.

@ Jas:- As You said, everyone had tears in their eyes at that moment. We all know that one fine day every champion will have to say bye bye to his professional life, however we don’t want Roger to say goodbye when he is down and out. I am sure he will be back with a bang.

  6. Reda Says:

if fedreer didn’t win grand slam this year i think he will never do ever.
Nadal, Muray and Gicovic will be stronger.
Federer problem is himself, he should be more out, more adventurer, specially with Nadal.
i think he can win any final if he become more aggressive and determined

  7. ShowStalker Says:

@ Reda: Hey there might be lot of truth in what you are saying, however i strongly feel for him like everyone and he’ll be back for sure.

  8. ish Says:

i was shocked 2 c roger crying like that & rafa saying sorry 4 what he had done but it was not d end of roger’s era ihope he wins french open this time
